Customer setting his own cake price

This short post came from another cake decorator.  A world known cake artist and and an author of many cake decorating books.  Her name is Debbie Brown.

I had the pleasure of inviting Debbie to my country for seminars and I had the chance to get to know her a little bit better.  A very smart and witty woman and she knows exactly what she wants and how much she is worth.

A few days ago the following had happened to her and I asked her if I could post it on my blog.  A place where cake decorator's share their funny stories which are occurring in this profession .... :)

A prospect customer had sent her the following email...

Hi,
I am very interested in the cake with the 3 babies on it for £16.99, but I would also like to add some writing on it if possible? Would there be an extra charge for this if so how much? Would you be able to provide me with the cake for the afternoon of Saturday 27th Feb?
Many Thanks

The cake was this one

Me:  What are you thinking people? (*&^(*&%$&^$(*  !!! £16.99??? Is this Tesco? Waitrose, Sainsburry perhaps? Do you think that there is a magic wand and all of a sudden the cakes appear? Just to purchase a cake drum and sugarpaste the money is gone lady and it ain't even enough.

Sometimes we just have to look at the bright side of things and smile.... I wonder which side is the bright side in this instance?

What would you have answered this person?

  1. Nothing... usually not everybody knows the details of making a cake. And not everybody want to know. So the nest answer is to explain why that cake is more expensive .... then others :) !

  2. I get this at times too, in fact 2 weeks ago after a would be client askes about making a cake like a picture they had, I said sure no problem, what size do you need and how many people will you be wanting it so serve. After she told me I told her that a 2 tier 8" and 6" would suite the party, that is 22 servings at $3.50 per serving... $77.00 a hour later she said GREAT !!! that is perfect, now will you take $50.00 for it?

It was like a slap in the face.

Here is what I told her:

"No, I do not negotiate my prices ... It is more than fair for the time, materials in the cake and fondant, and then making the animals and decorating. Thank you."

I never heard another word from her...
